A Colorful City by Frayde A Colorful City by Frayde
Guess I like to paint with vibrant colors, haha.
Concept for a canceled game @ NoHuman Studio, made around Februrary 2015.

Now that I see it, I would probably change some stuff but hey, I was really pleased with the result at the time !

Enjoy !

I think I'll push the design further in the next few months. I really enjoyed painting these buildings.

Have you ever considered putting up a few process videos, maybe with some voice-over commentary on a site like Gumroad? I'm betting more than just me would be interested. :)

Yeah I thought about it and I know people would be very interested.

I show some steps to my friends and colleagues to have a direct feedback wether they like it or not, understand the idea or not, but that's all.
I'm more like sharing with someone and giving/taking advices directly rather than showing a process on the internet. It wouldn't be very different from what other artists do, technically speaking.

I love looking at a final piece, and see the artist's passion in every color and detail. I also love the mystery that comes from looking at a piece and asking yourself how it was made. Just like a magic trick actually: enjoy what you see and can't see :)

I love how you sort of saturate the objects that are in the sun light. Eventhough the difference between shadow and light is quite drastic, it still blends in realllllly well!

Thanks,

I don't know if art can be taught. You can learn just by looking at awesome art so that's a good starting point :D

Too many details when not needed, the composition could have been a little more dramatic, some shapes are not very satisfying... I would add some details regarding natural stuff and make it cohabit with the city a little bit more. Also, it seems abandoned, which shouldn't be the case. This piece lacks a little bit of life ! Depth and overall contrast could also be a little better. Also, it's saturated everywhere, making it hard to read sometimes.

Becoming a great artist takes time, I guess. I learned a lot with this piece. :)

Can I ask:

Beyond the fact that I love the "seperation" between parts in draped in sunlight and parts draped in shadow, how did you work out how to segment light from shadow? Did you start with one average light "setting" and then molded out the segments with light/shadow? Or maybe you just imagined what parts had sunlight from the start and just "rolled with it"? (Or an entirely third method?)

I like to paint light and shadows directly with colors, which means no average light setting. I painted with blue and yellow blocks at the start, because I wanted to see these two colors in my piece and see how it worked. And then refined the contrast and details.
I like to have a strong composition at the beginning, even though I changed some things during the process. I didn't just imagine which parts would be in the shadows or light, I tried various ideas till I was satisfied.

Some people paint with values (black and white) to make the lighting and contrast work without bothering with color, but I'm not very confident with the process. I prefer to have a quick projection of how colors will be balanced at the end, and I sometimes turn my painting to black and white to balance contrasts.

Hope that helps :)
